Tourism pressure in Barcelona is overwhelming several bus lines, hindering daily mobility for local residents and jeopardizing access to priority seating for the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
The most visible case is line V19, which connects residential neighborhoods with tourist hotspots like Park Güell and Turó de la Rovira. Buses are often packed with tourists, forcing residents to wait long periods to board and preventing them from traveling comfortably. To make matters worse, reserved seats are frequently occupied by visitors who ignore local regulations.
This issue also affects other lines:
-
Line 24: Frequently used to reach Park Güell, it experiences similar saturation to the V19, especially during peak hours and weekends.
-
Lines 116 and 114: Small neighborhood minibuses with limited capacity, overwhelmed by tourists heading to higher-altitude areas of the city.
-
Line 22: Also connects to tourist areas and suffers overcrowding during high season.
-
Lines V27, V29, H16, D20, and H6: Particularly saturated in summer and during major events, as they connect to Barceloneta and other points of interest.
While the metro and tram systems may also experience occasional crowding near tourist zones, the situation is much more severe on neighborhood buses, due to their smaller capacity and the intense pressure from tourism.
Neighborhood associations have called for urgent measures: increasing service frequency, reinforcing access control to prioritize residents, and ensuring that reserved seats are respected. However, the actions taken so far—such as removing certain lines from Google Maps to reduce tourist traffic—have proven insufficient.
